Friday the 13th – Did you know?…

Interesting facts about Friday the 13th:

  • Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer and Theodore Bundy and Albert DeSalvo all have thirteen letters in their name. (Remember this when naming your kids… it may come back to haunt you.)
  • In France, socialites once known as “quartoziens” made themselves available as the fourteenth guest at a party or dinner. (Hey everyone – just so you know, I’m a quartozien.)
  • In Formula One racing there is no car number 13.  The number was eliminated after two drivers died in crashes driving a car numbered 13.  (Formula One is the one where they don’t just drive in circles.)
  • In Florence the house numbers go 12,  12-1/2,  14.  (Leave it to the Italians to make even house numbering complicated.)
  • Most airports skip gate 13 and have no 13th aisle. (They should’ve learned from the Italians.)
  • One of the origins of number 13 being unlucky is the fact that 13 people attended The Last Supper. (It was only unlucky for 2 of them.  Okay, so it was REALLY unlucky for them.)
  • Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue. There is no 13th Avenue in San Francisco, instead Funston Avenue is between 12th and 14th Avenues. (Did you know there are a lot of Italians living in San Francisco?  I wonder if there’s a connection?)
  • Every year has at least one and at most three Friday the13ths.  (Only Port Dover, Ontario wishes there were more – to find out why CLICK HERE)
  • The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia. (Say that 3 times real fast.)
  • According to the British Medical Journal there is a significant increase in traffic-related accidents when the date is Friday 13th.  (Lesson:  Drive carefully if you’re going to be in Britain today.)
  • More than 60 million people worldwide claim  to be affected by a fear of Friday 13th. Some of them won’t go to work, drive cars or get out of bed on this day. (Funny, I feel the same way on Sunday mornings – so maybe it isn’t the drinking after all?)
