Stop Waiting for the “Perfect” time to start. It will NEVER come – Part One

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had people say to me “I’m ready to get in shape, but…”   Then you can pick from a whole list of “reasons”:

I’ll wait until the kids are in school

I’ll wait until the kids are out of school

I’ll wait until after my vacation which is coming up

I’ll wait until I’m not so busy at work

Do any of these sound like you?  Or do you have a few “dillys” of your own?   I understand what you’re trying to do.  You want the best possible conditions to increase your chances of success.  The problem is you’re setting an impossible standard for yourself which guarantees you’ll fail.  Let me explain:

How many times have you thought to yourself “I’m starting my diet on Monday so I better get it all out of my system this weekend.”?  (I’ve done it too many times to count on my way to over 270 pounds.)   Welcome to the “diet” mentality.  It will set you up to fail every time.  Here’s why.

When you have the “diet” mentality every time you eat a “forbidden food” you’ve failed your diet.   So then you think “What the heck.  I’ve messed up, might as well indulge myself.”  Now, you’ve really failed. This mentality also implies there’s an “ending point”.  Right?  No one plans to stay on a diet forever.  You grit your teeth, starve yourself, take the pills hit your goal – then stop completely.  Then in a few weeks (or days) guess what?  Right back where you started – it’s cliche.

So, you’re unhappy before you start.  You’re unhappy while you’re doing it.  You’re happier for a few weeks (maybe).  Then you’re back to unhappy.  Please don’t do this to yourself.

With the lifestyle mentality, there very few completely forbidden foods.  It’s about living better – not perfect.  Now there’s no reason to wait until Monday or until after your vacation to start making healthy choices.  If it truly is your lifestyle you should be making them all the time anyway.  Sure you’re going to enjoy yourself a little more when you’re on vacation, but it shouldn’t be a gorgefest where you pack on 10lbs in one week.

Start today.  Start now – I guarantee you’ll NEVER regret starting sooner rather than later.
